Orally disintegrating tablets (ODT) are increasingly popular as dosage forms as they are designed to disintegrate quickly in the mouth without the need for water, to provide treatment for conditions that can occur unexpectedly, such as migraine, and for use by patients with difficulty swallowing. They have advantages over syrups and suspensions for paediatric medicines as they avoid the need for preservatives.
ODTs are typically produced by either freeze drying or by tablet compaction. In the latter application the key to a rapid ODT formulation is the use of an effective superdisintegrant.
