SuperStarch® 200

SuperStarch® 200 is a partly pregelatinised maize starch that integrates multiple functionalities of binder, disintegrant, lubricant and flow-aid. SuperStarch® 200 conforms to all tests in major pharmacopoeias. The main application areas of SuperStarch® 200 include direct compression tablet formulations as well as wet granulation and capsule formulations. SuperStarch® 200 is made from maize starch containing a mixture of amylopectin and amylose. The water soluble amylose in SuperStarch® 200 provides the binding needed for tableting and granulation. Amylopectin provides the structure of unruptured starch grains enabling disintegration of a tablet by swelling of the starch grains.

SuperStarch® 200 maintains low water activity compared to other common excipients, making it suitable for formulation with water sensitive actives. Water sorption is completely reversible. SuperStarch® 200 can be used as a binder in wet granulation, either in the dry blend or dispersed in the granulating liquid.

The figure below compares the viscosity profile of SuperStarch® 200 to typical binders such as fully pregelatinised starch, starch paste and a competitor product.

  • Starch - General

What is the advantage in using pre-gelatinised starch instead of normal starch?

Pregelatinised starch has a cold water soluble component resulting from the disruption of the starch grains during manufacture. When used as a binder in wet granulation pregelatinised starch can be added dry to at the first stage, and granulation can be effected using only water. When normal (native) starch is used it has to be first gelatinised (cooked) in hot water before adding in the granulation process.

What is the difference between fully pre-gelatinized and partially pre-gelatinized starch?

Fully pregelatinised starch has all the starch grains cooked and has a very high water soluble content. It is therefore most suitable as a binder in wet granulation. Partially pregelatinised starch has only been partly cooked during manufacture and therefore also contains some original starch grains. It is therefore particularly suitable as a  multifunctional excipient (filler-binder-disintegrant) in both direct compression and wet granulation. Partially pregelatinised starch is also a very effective filler and disintegrant for hard gelatin capsule formulations.

    How is SuperStarch® 200 packed?

25kg multi-layer paper bags with a PE inner liner.

    Who does release the product?

SuperStarch® 200 is released by the DFE QA department in line with all our other products.
